Benefits of Sanctioning with Triathlon Alberta

Triathlon Alberta aims to ensure events are safe, fun, and fair. There is a rigorous process in place that helps us deliver on this mandate; this process is called race sanctioning.

Our team works alongside Race Directors throughout the sanctioning process which spans from late fall/early winter all the way to race day! Although this is not an exhaustive list, the following actions are completed throughout the sanctioning process:

  • Review of the application by highly qualified, nationally trained technical officials. Items that are reviewed include:

    • Race course design

    • Race day communication strategies

    • Emergency protocols

    • Volunteer placement (to ensure safety standards are met)

    • Signage

    • And more

  • Sanctioned events must adhere to rules outlined by Triathlon Alberta, Triathlon Canada, and the International Triathlon Union (ITU)

  • A team of Technical Officials is assigned to each event for the day of the race, to ensure the race is safe, fun, and fair

  • Insurance coverage is provided to athletes, race directors, volunteers, race personnel, officials and Triathlon Alberta staff who may be onsite on the day of the event

Safety is our top priority and that includes the health of our members, volunteers, officials, spectators and given the current state of COVID-19 in Alberta, the community at large in which the events take part in. Though we have made the difficult decision to not sanction events for the balance of the 2020 racing season, we still aim to provide benefits for our members and look forward to hopefully getting back to a more normal season in 2021!

Triathlon Alberta member Insurance FAQ

The following FAQ is not all inclusive as it would be too lengthy to list all the insuring agreements under the Triathlon Alberta insurance policy, however, we wanted to provide a bit of clarity on some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q: If I have a Triathlon Alberta annual membership, am I covered in a sanctioned event?

A: Yes, the insurance coverage will be valid for any Triathlon Alberta sanctioned event.

Q
: If I have a Triathlon Alberta day membership, am I covered for any sanctioned triathlon event?

A: No, you are covered on the day of a sanctioned triathlon event that you have signed up for.

Q
: What does it mean when you say that I have insurance coverage when I’m a member of Triathlon Alberta?

A: The insurance coverage includes General liability as well as Sport Accident coverage.

Q
: Am I covered under General liability and Sport Accident with my Day membership?

A: Yes, you are covered on the day of a sanctioned triathlon event that you have signed up for.

Q
: If I have a Triathlon Alberta membership, am I covered in an unsanctioned event?

A: No, the insurance coverage will be invalid for any unsanctioned event.

Q
: If I purchased the extended 24/7 coverage, will that provide me with coverage for an unsanctioned event?

A: No, the extended 24/7 coverage is there to give athletes the freedom to train individually, and not just in sanctioned group training. The extended coverage is still limited to training activities, however – for example, if you are crossing the street on your lunch break and get hit by a car, that has nothing to do with Triathlon training and would not be covered. Similarly, competing in an unsanctioned triathlon, would be considered competing, not training, and coverage would not apply.

Q
: If I have bought the pedal protect policy for the bike, will that be covered in an unsanctioned event?

A: No, the policy covers the bikes during, and travel to/from, sanctioned events and training. If a Triathlon Alberta member has the extended 24/7 coverage and the pedal protect, the pedal protect coverage would similarly extend to the individual training activities, but not to racing.
