Kronos Triathlon Club Inspires the Next Generation of Multisport Athletes in Calgary
While many kids spend their weekends glued to screens, a growing number of Calgary youth are lacing up their runners, buckling their bike helmets, and diving headfirst into the sport of triathlon.
The Kronos Triathlon Club, a long-standing fixture in Calgary’s endurance community, is making waves with its youth programs, designed to develop young athletes through swim, bike, and run training in a fun, inclusive, and skill-focused environment.
Founded in 2006, Kronos has become a hub for youth athletes. Its youth programs has seen particular growth in recent years, attracting participants from across Calgary and surrounding communities. With programs for ages as early as two and into adulthood, the programs offer progressive training tailored to age and experience — from first-time triathletes to high-performance juniors with podium dreams.
Kronos youth athletes train year-round under certified coaches, with sessions that blend skill development, endurance, and just the right amount of fun. The club’s youth offerings include intro-to-triathlon clinics, weekly training for every level, race support for local and provincial events, and pathways to provincial and national races.
The club also emphasizes a strong team culture, encouraging athletes to support one another, take risks, and celebrate progress — whether that’s finishing their first open-water swim or shaving minutes off a transition.
“We’re incredibly proud to support clubs like Kronos that are creating safe, inclusive spaces for youth to discover the joy of triathlon. These programs are where lifelong passions are born — and where our next generation of champions begins.” states Sebastian Porten, executive director of Triathlon Alberta.
In alignment with Triathlon Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, Kronos offers a clear development pathway for youth athletes looking to advance in the sport — while also keeping the door wide open for those who simply want to try something new.
“Not every kid wants to play traditional team sports,” Alexander Patton, Triathlon Alberta's Provincial Sport Development Coordinator added. “Triathlon offers a unique space where individual effort is celebrated, but community is everything. Kronos has done an excellent job on this.”
Kronos youth athletes regularly compete in local and provincial events, including the Triathlon Alberta Youth & Junior Cup Series, the Western Canada Development Series, and the National Development Series. However, racing is never required — participation, progress, and personal challenge are always the primary goals.
As interest in multisport continues to grow, the club hopes to expand its youth programming even further in 2025.
