Joint Statement from MEC and Triathlon Alberta on Update on Air Quality in regard to MEC Calgary Triathlon and MEC Edmonton Triathlon
MEC and Triathlon Alberta are still closely monitoring the situation in regard to the forest fires in British Columbia for MEC Edmonton Triathlon in Leduc and MEC Calgary Triathlon in Turner Valley. We are closely monitoring the Air Quality readings from Alberta Health Services every single hour leading up to race day and start.
As of 1:30pm MT on Friday August 17, 2018, forecast Air Quality for Edmonton and Calgary looks to be improving and no changes to the Race Schedule for both triathlons have been made. However, potential implications to the Race Schedule might happen if the Air Quality Readings are:
- AQHI 4-6 : recommend decreased distance for sensitive individuals or voluntary withdrawal for individuals with health concerns
- AQHI 7-8: Only the Try-a Tri distance would be offered. Strongly advise individuals with health concerns to withdraw
- AQHI 9+: Cancellation of event
Our thoughts are with those that are affected, evacuated or fighting the forest fires and MEC will attempt to give athletes as much notice as possible if there are changes to the Race Schedule or a cancellation decision. Please check your email for communication and updates.
